Ontario’s Transition Period for Unregulated Operators Ends
This cutoff date was established to provide operators with sufficient time to apply for and secure licenses, enabling them to function within the regulated market, and to allow unlicensed operators to withdraw from the market.
From this point forward, the AGCO has the authority to initiate legal proceedings against operators who continue to operate within the market without a license.
The transition period was implemented earlier this month when the AGCO revised its Registrar’s Internet Gaming Standards. At that time, the AGCO stated that it would also provide a notification period to assist these operators in further transitioning to the controlled marketplace.
The most significant alteration to the standards was to standard 1.22, which was revised to set the transition period deadline to October 31st.
Today also marks the commencement of implementation for various other standards, including standard 4.09, which necessitates that gaming systems be installed and maintained in a manner that ensures user safety and security.
Furthermore, standard 4.35 also came into effect today, which limits access to live dealer games exclusively to individuals who have a legitimate business reason to be present.
This is a significant development for Ontario’s newly launched online gambling market, which commenced on April 4th.
